Jaw tightness, clenching, headaches, facial tension and neck discomfort can affect everything from eating and sleeping to concentration and everyday comfort. Charleston TMJ Massage Therapy provides focused therapeutic massage designed to address the muscles surrounding the jaw, face, head, neck and shoulders. The goal is simple: reduce muscular tension, improve comfort and help your body move and function more freely.
The temporomandibular joints, commonly called the TMJs, connect your lower jaw to your skull.
When the muscles and structures surrounding these joints become irritated, tight or overworked, you may experience symptoms commonly associated with temporomandibular disorders, or TMD.
TMJ-focused massage concentrates on the muscular tension and soft-tissue restrictions that may contribute to jaw and facial discomfort.
TMJ-focused massage isn’t simply about massaging the area that hurts.
Muscles throughout the jaw, face, head, neck and shoulders work together. Tightness or dysfunction in one area can influence another.
Your session may include focused therapeutic massage to areas such as the:
Jaw • Face • Temples • Scalp • Neck • Shoulders
Treatment is individualized according to your areas of tension, comfort level and goals.
Every session begins with a conversation about what you’re experiencing.
We’ll discuss your symptoms, areas of muscular tension, history and goals before beginning treatment.
Your session may include therapeutic massage of the jaw, facial muscles, head, neck and shoulders.
When appropriate, intraoral massage may also be used to access specific muscles from inside the mouth that cannot be reached as effectively externally.
Intraoral massage is performed only with your informed consent.
You may choose not to receive intraoral work, change your mind or ask for the technique to stop at any point during your session.
Your first appointment gives us an opportunity to look at the bigger picture.
Before treatment begins, we’ll talk about what you’ve been experiencing, where you’re feeling tension and what you hope to improve.
This allows me to develop a massage approach specifically for you rather than providing the same routine to every client.
Your treatment may involve a combination of focused work to the jaw, face, head, neck and shoulders depending on what we find and what feels appropriate for you.
For clients who would like ongoing care, multi-session packages are available.
TMJ massage should not feel aggressively painful. Some areas may be tender because the muscles are already tight or irritated, but pressure and techniques are adjusted according to your comfort.
Communication throughout the session is encouraged.
Intraoral massage may be incorporated when appropriate. It allows access to certain jaw muscles from inside the mouth.
It is not required for every client or every session.
No.
Intraoral work is performed only with your informed consent. You may decline it completely or ask to stop at any time.
Comfortable clothing is recommended. Nancy will explain what is needed for your particular session while maintaining appropriate draping, privacy and comfort.
There is no universal number of sessions.
Some people experience improvement relatively quickly, while longstanding muscular tension may require multiple sessions.
Your response to treatment and your individual goals will help determine whether follow-up appointments are appropriate.
Massage may help reduce muscular tension associated with clenching or grinding.
However, clenching and grinding can have multiple causes, so massage should not replace evaluation or treatment from a dentist or other appropriate healthcare professional.
Yes, in many situations.
TMJ massage can be used alongside care from dentists, physical therapists and other healthcare providers.
If you recently had dental work, surgery or another medical procedure, please let Nancy know before your appointment.
You may notice that the jaw, face, neck or shoulders feel different following focused massage.
Because individual responses vary, Nancy will discuss appropriate aftercare with you following your session.
Living with constant jaw and facial tension can be exhausting.
If tight muscles, clenching, headaches or neck tension are affecting your comfort, a focused TMJ massage session may be a valuable part of your care.
